FRSC Begins Clampdown On Motorists Without Drivers Licence

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, has begun a clampdown on motorists without valid driver’s licence in the state.

The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mr Ahmed Hassan, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Akure that many motorists in the state had no licences to be on the road.

Hassan, recently transferred to the state from the FRSC headquarters, Abuja, said that majority of the motorists also lacked knowledge and understanding of traffic rules and regulations.

He said that the sector command would work assiduously to reduce the number of such motorists on the roads to reduce traffic crashes to the barest minimum.

“Since my arrival in the state, we have realised that we have a lot of motorists that do not even understand traffic rules and regulations.

“In the last two weeks, we have started clampdown on people driving without driver’s licence and made sure that they understand traffic rules and regulations.

“I am imploring the people of Ondo state to try as much as possible to go to the board of internal revenue to renew their driver’s licences.

“If they don’t have any, they should procure one before getting behind the wheel of any vehicle because is no longer business as usual.

“For you to drive, you must be licensed and if you are not, we will be forced to impound your vehicle. If the vehicle itself does not have licence or the paper is not valid we will impound the vehicle too,” he said.

The sector commander further called on motorists to repair their vehicles before embarking on any journey.

He said they should endeavour to fix the car cooling system, brakes, wipers and other things, adding that such were necessary to avoid crashes during raining season.

“Now that we are in the rainy season, we have observed that a lot of cars do not have cooling system and wipers.

So, the drivers are forced to drive with one hand while cleaning the wind screen with the other hand. This can result in fatal accidents if care is not taken.

“If you can not see when it is raining, it is better you park by the road side with your parking lights on.

“This is to enable other motorists to know that you are off the road. But it’s advisable for people to repair their vehicles.

“It is also essential that they have knowledge of driving techniques in the rain and keep distance between themselves and other vehicles to avoid crashes,’’ Hassan added.

The commander explained that the FRSC would ensure that people maintained social distancing inside commercial vehicles to prevent spread of coronavirus.

“In the last two weeks, we have arrested six vehicles that were over loaded.

“The passengers of any vehicle that carries more that the required capacity will be discharged and the vehicle impounded,” he said.
