At least four people died after a fire broke out at a hospital treating Coronavirus (COVID-19) patients in central Indian city of Nagpur, police said on Saturday.

The fire broke out late Friday at the privately-owned 30-bed facility, prompting police and local authorities to carry out evacuations.

“Four bodies were recovered from the hospital, located on the top floors of a mall building.

“27 patients were shifted to other hospitals,” local police inspector Sajid Ahmad said by phone.

The cause of the fire was being investigated and state authorities ordered a probe into the accident.

Deaths in fires are common in India and are often due to poor safety measures and a lack of fire escapes.

The fires are often caused by substandard or ageing electrical equipment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences.

Nagpur is located in Maharashtra, the state worst-hit by the pandemic in India, accounting for over 40 per cent of the country’s 145,000 infections on Saturday.
